There is something about moccasins that intrigues me. The fact that they are such an ancient shoe and stitched together by the hands of a working person is part of it.
Moccasins are symbolic of so many things.
They are taken from the hide of Mother Nature's creatures and serve the very purpose of helping you through your daily routine. While moccasins entail different symbolism in a varied amount of cultures, they always serve as a cherished one.
The moccasin is a symbol of protection and acceptance. Only new moccasins were worn to battle, as they symbolized a safe return. At burial, a good pair of moccasins, often beaded on the bottom, symbolized the family’s love for the deceased. Whereas tipped moccasins represent aging; and worn moccasins represent life and experience and wisdom of elders.
Do you see why I am so intrigued by them?
If you are a fellow moccasin owner, you know what I am talking about. If you are not, I suggest you get a pair. You will be happy you did.
Here are a few places I recommend getting moccasins from. I am a big supporter of small businesses. And often, those are the places you get the best work done. It is a more personal experience and you can get exactly what you’re looking for.
I Moccasin Approve Itasca Moccasin. I received my degree in Anthropology at Minnesota State University Moorhead, very close to where Itasca Moccasin is located. And I know the kind hard working people who run these kinds of businesses. This place comes with more than just a recommendation from me. My friend and fellow Anthropologist, Larissa, is the one who referred them to me. And let me tell you people, she knows what she is talking about.
Another good place to look for moccasins is on Etsy. While not all pairs are "authentic" moccasins, it is a great place to find a good looking pair. There are so many different creative juices flowing on Etsy so the choices are always different!
If price is not a concern for you and you are looking for handcrafted, authentic moccasins check out Manitobah Mukluks. O.my.goodness. I could spend all day on this website, mostly dreaming and drooling. My mom referred me to this company. Being a Canadian herself, Manitobah Mukluks is something she has always known about. Since she turned me on to them, I have been saving to get a pair. If you are just clicking in to drool as well, check out their history link. It is cool to see where the artists and company derive from.
I hope you decide to get a pair, you will love them.
Happy trekking friends!
